Who Is W.D. Gaster?

W.D. Gaster is the former royal scientist of the Underground in Undertale, the indie RPG by Toby Fox. According to the game’s lore, Gaster fell into his own creation — the CORE — and was shattered across time and space. He never appears directly in normal gameplay, but his presence lingers in hidden rooms, unused dialogue files, and one of the game’s most famous secrets.

Everything Gaster “says” is written in Wingdings, the Microsoft symbol font. His name itself is a clue: W.D. stands for WingDings.

Where Wingdings Appears in Undertale

Entry 17

The most famous Gaster text is Entry 17, found in the game’s data with a 1-in-101 chance of appearing in a hidden room. When decoded from Wingdings, it reads as a dark, fragmented lab log about an experiment gone wrong. Paste it into the translator above to read it yourself.

The Gaster Followers

Three grey, faceless NPCs — the Gaster Followers — speak about the fallen scientist in Wingdings. Each one reveals a fragment of what happened to him.

Mystery Man Sprite

A hidden sprite nicknamed the “Mystery Man” is widely believed to be Gaster himself, standing silently behind a grey door.

How to Decode Gaster’s Wingdings

  1. Copy the Wingdings symbols from the game text, wiki, or video you are viewing.
  2. Paste them into the Gaster translator above and make sure it is in decode mode (✦ → Text).
  3. Read the hidden message. Gaster’s entries decode into English — often dark, fragmented lab notes.

Why Gaster Speaks in Wingdings

Using Wingdings was a brilliant storytelling choice: the symbols look like language while remaining unreadable, which makes Gaster feel truly “shattered across time and space” — present, but impossible to understand without effort. Decoding his text is a rite of passage for Undertale fans, and it is exactly what this page is built for.

W.D. stands for WingDings — the symbol font all of Gaster’s dialogue is written in.

Gaster originates in Undertale’s hidden files and lore. Similar Wingdings text and mysterious references also appear in Deltarune, Toby Fox’s follow-up game.

Can I translate English to Gaster’s Wingdings?

Yes — switch the tool above to encode mode (Text → ✦) and type anything to write like Gaster.

Why can’t I read Wingdings without a translator?

Wingdings replaces every letter with an unrelated symbol, so it is unreadable by design. A translator reverses the font’s character map to restore the original text.
